PDP & Pre-Employment Assessment

Medical assessments required for a Professional Driving Permit or as part of a pre-employment screening process.

Certain permits and job offers require a medical assessment before they can be finalised. Primecare Medical Health Centre completes PDP and pre-employment assessments at both our Sasolburg and Phalaborwa practices.

Employers and licensing authorities generally specify exactly what an assessment needs to cover, and our practitioners are familiar with the standard requirements for both PDP and pre-employment checks.

What is a PDP assessment?

A Professional Driving Permit assessment checks whether you meet the medical requirements to hold a PDP, covering areas such as vision, hearing, and general fitness to drive professionally.

These assessments follow the standard requirements set out for PDP applications, so the same process applies regardless of which practice you visit.

What does a pre-employment assessment involve?

A pre-employment assessment is a general medical check requested by an employer as part of the hiring process. It typically covers a physical examination and may include additional checks depending on what the role requires.

What should I bring to the assessment?

For either assessment, bring a form of identification and, where applicable, the specific form or requirements provided by your employer or the licensing authority. This helps make sure the assessment covers everything required for your application.

What happens after my assessment?

Once complete, you will receive the relevant documentation to submit as part of your application or employment process.

How do I book ahead?

Where possible, book your assessment a few days ahead of your submission deadline, particularly if additional tests or referrals turn out to be needed. This gives enough time to complete the process without unnecessary delays to your application or start date.

If your employer or the licensing authority has specific forms that need to be completed, bring these along so they can be filled in during your visit rather than afterwards.

Both assessments are completed by a general practitioner in a single appointment in most cases, though additional tests may occasionally be required depending on your individual health history.
